Personal Recollections and Observations of General Nelson A. Miles: Embracing a Brief View of the Civil War: Or from New England to the Golden Gate
Published in Paperback by Univ of Nebraska Pr (April, 1992)
Average review score:

Miles' books detail the Indian Wars with historical accountsGeneral Nelson A. Miles wrote a detailed, history- filled accounts of the Red River Wars and other Indian battles. Illustrations by F. Remington were a big surprise to me, as it was of a direct relative, William F. Schmalsle, Indian Scout, Guide, and Courier. The rescue of the German Sisters is a heartfelt experience. The reader will feel like one is living in the Old West, with all the joys, adventures, and tribulations that the characters experienced. The references in the back offer one further insight into the past. As Miles was involved in other battles besides those with the Indians, the history buff will find a lot of references in the back of the book which will result in many hours of pleasurable research and reading. The General Miles history trail may lead you to a long lost relative, as I found out, with numerous sources of information. So try reading the General Miles books from your library and if you like, order them from Amazon and take them home, or take them camping in the woods and plains, visit the historical places mentioned.

Average review score:

My 2.3 year old can read this one!! And loves it!This book is one of the Road to Reading series and is wonderful. My 2 year old was able to read it himself after we read it only about 5 times. He can now recite it without the book and impresses all his friends (and parents, especially) at his home daycare!! The rhyming words really make it a fun treat for young readers.

The Plum in the Golden Vase, or Chin P'ing Mei: Volume Two: The Rivals.
Published in Hardcover by Princeton Univ Pr (01 October, 2001)
Average review score:

The Plum in the Golden Vase: Volume Two: The RivalsUnlike most classic Chinese literature, the Chin P'ing Mei breaths with surprisingly real characters with timeless motives: love, hate, fear, ambition, sex... If the soap opera existed when the book was written, The Plum in the Golden Vase would have had a following equal to Dallas. Not only are the book's characters sympathetic and fully developed, one actually cares about and identifies with them. Roy's translation reads more like a modern novel than a beloved Asian classic. Unlike earlier translations which sought to spare the reader some of the randier details of upper class private life, Roy presents all the particulars in a matter-of-fact manner that even today has the power to astonish the modern reader with it's open celebration of decandance. A great deal of the intended social commentary concerning the moral and spritual corruption of the time period will be apparent only to Asian historians and scholars; however, as with all great works, it may be read and enjoyed on many levels. To non-Chinese readers, keeping track of the multitude of unfamiliar names can be a problem, but there is a complete index of names included in the book but, although irksome at times, it is possible to keep track of everyone, even the servants,in this sprawling, epic work. I can't think of a better introduction to Chinese culture and history than the Chin P'ing Mei. Here's hoping the publication of Volume Three is not long in the making.
